Air Pollution and Public Health in Southern Delaware County

In partnership with Clean Air Council, Marcus Hook Area Neighbors for Public Health helped launch an EPA-funded three-year air monitoring program in October 2023. Through this program, MHANPH has helped to install 30 outdoor PurpleAir monitors and 5 high quality VOC Sensors across homes, businesses, churches, and muncipal buildings in Southern Delaware County.

What are PurpleAir Monitors?

PurpleAir monitors track particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), key pollutants that affect air quality. The data from these monitors is publicly available 24/7 through the PurpleAir website. The PurpleAir map helps our community stay informed about hyper local air quality.

What are VOC Air Sensors?

Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs, are chemicals emitted from industrial facilities, fossil fuels, and even housholds products. VOCs like benzene, tolulene, formadelhyde and others can have severe impacts on human health. Five high quality VOC air sensors have been set up around Linwood, Trainer, Marcus Hook, and Chester to monitor for VOCs in our local airshed.
