ASSESS Community and Environmental Health Study

The Assessing Strengths, Stressors and Environmental justice in SoutheaStern (ASSESS) Pennsylvania Communities Study, published in July 2024, aimed to better understand the cumulative impact of both chemical and non-chemical stressors on environmental justice communities in southern Delaware County. The study, which included a community and environemental health survery as well as focus groups, was a collaboration between Marcus Hook Area Neighbors for Public Health, Clean Air Council, Johns Hopkins, and community co-investigators.

The ASSESS study had two primary goals:

  1. Collect data to improve our understanding of community strengths, stressors, and needs
  2. Describe the cumulative health impacts of both the chemical (exposure to air pollutants) and nonchemical (including economic hardship) stressors.

To achieve these goals, the study team used a community-based participatory research (CPBR) approach. This means that impacted residents and community leaders served as co-investigators on all phases of the research process including design, implementation, evaluation, and publication of the study results.
